On June 4, 2020, the Shaking Table Laboratory of Chongqing University successfully completed the first full-size solid 6-story cold-formed thin-walled steel structure shaking table test, and achieved complete success.

Simulate and reproduce the magnitude 8 earthquake
The test project originated from the National Key R&D Program "Research and Demonstration Application of High-Performance Steel Structure System" (2016YFC0701201) hosted by Academician Zhou Xuhong and Professor Shi Yu and the major project of National Natural Science Foundation of China "Research on High-Efficiency Steel Structure Seismic System" (51890902) .

"This test is a new system called a cold-formed thin-walled steel structure building system. Such a system was mainly used in low-rise buildings (below three stories) and cannot be applied to multiple floors." Academician Zhou Xuhong explained that as early as More than 10 years ago, he led the team to study the multi-level development of this kind of housing system, and achieved a series of results. This is a large-scale test on the seismic performance of the building. Through the simulation of the 8th magnitude earthquake and the artificially synthesized seismic wave test, after nearly 100 earthquake tests, the 6-story cold-formed thin-walled steel structure building still stands tall.
 
"When simulating an earthquake, we could see the house tossing around, but it did not collapse." Academician Zhou Xuhong said that the test has overcome the key technical problems of the earthquake resistance of the house and truly realized that "small earthquakes are not bad, moderate earthquakes can be repaired. The earthquake won't fall."
 
Expected to be applied in Sichuan and Chongqing
According to reports, the 6-storey cold-formed thin-walled steel structure house adopts two lateral force resistance systems: steel tube end columns-double-sided skinned steel plate shear walls and clamped single-layer thin steel plate shear walls. The structural plane size of the model is 5.6 m (length) × 4.2m (width), the floor height is 2.7m, and the total height is 16.2m.
"The test has a series of features such as a new structural system, large model size, large structural aspect ratio, and loading condition intensity of up to 8 degrees. It is the world's first full-scale cold-formed thin-walled steel structure house with 6 floors of bidirectional seismic input. Shaking table test." Academician Zhou Xuhong said that the building for this shaking table test was processed, manufactured and installed by Hubei Huaxindun Modern Steel Structure Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and the structure was connected to the vibrating table surface through a steel beam base. The two new types of vertical and horizontal shear walls jointly developed and manufactured with Professor Xu Lei of the University of Waterloo in Canada have the characteristics of high shear resistance, high rigidity and convenient installation and manufacturing.
"At present, the country is vigorously developing prefabricated steel structure buildings. Cold-formed thin-walled steel structure houses use low steel, light weight, high assembly efficiency, and low labor input. The production and construction processes are all dry operations. Noise, dust and construction The waste discharge is small and the quality of the house is easy to guarantee. It is a prefabricated green building with wide application prospects.” Academician Zhou Xuhong said that the results of shaking table tests show that cold-formed thin-walled steel structure multi-storey houses are safe, reliable and economical. Practical, he hopes to promote the application in Sichuan and Chongqing.

Academician Zhou Xuhong introduced that the next experiment will add intelligence, such as screwing and other tasks can be done by robots.
   Currently, the team is conducting a shaking table test of a 6-story cold-formed thin-walled steel structure building. Academician Zhou Xuhong hopes to develop to 15 or 18 floors in the next step. In his opinion, steel structure houses are modern houses, which are energy-saving, land-saving, water-saving, environmental protection, factory production, on-site installation, and construction time is greatly shortened, which improves construction efficiency and is not affected by climate. Not only is it easy to use in seismic zones, it can also be widely used in other non-seismic zones.
   Now, Academician Zhou also applies the steel structure house to his home, integrating solar energy, wind energy and intelligent systems. "It has been transformed into a tea room and laundry room. It doesn't matter if the circuit system at home has no electricity. I still have radio waves that never disappear." He said.
